Summer Youth Activities
A work training and education program for low-income youth 14-21 years of age
during the summer months. Participants receive paid work experience as well as
assistance to help improve and complete their education.
Program Description: The Summer Component of the Youth Activities Program is
a work training and education program whose main purpose is to increase the
employability of low-income youth (14-21 years of age) by providing them with an
opportunity to learn appropriate work behavior and gain experience. Participants
receive paid work experience at community agencies, city departments, other
government offices, public institutions, and private businesses. Youth who need
educational assistance work part-time and attend school part-time. Educational
options include credit retrieval, basic skills remediation, GED preparation.
There are no tuition costs for these programs. CSC also provides work-related
case management which includes referral to longer term intervention, prevention
and job services to participants. The summer component is a 3 month activity
within the scope of a year-round program. The youth participates in the youth
program for an average of 1 - 2 years.
Eligibility : To participate in the youth program all five of
these eligibility requirements must be met: 1. Live within 3 county area.
2. Be at least 14 years old when they apply and not older than 21 before the
end of the program.
3. Meet WIA income eligibility requirements.
4. Be legally eligible to work in the United States
5. Males 18 years or older must be registered with
Selective Service. Applicants must
show that they meet all these eligibility requirements by including documents
with the application.
Client Application Process: Referral Process and Limitations:
Applications are available in mid-March from all county Public High Schools
career centers, Neighborhood Community Centers, at many community organizations
that serve youth and at the reception desk of the CSC office nearest you. Target
dates for getting an application in: the months of April and May. Most summer
activities begin once school is out.
Summer Computer Camp
Students throughout the Linn, Benton, Lincoln
county region have the opportunity to gain valuable
vocational skills, enhance their chances for educational success and learn to
play computer games all at the same time. CSC’s Summer Computer Camp offers
students the chance to learn how to install and use software, put together Power
Point presentations, set up games, share files, use the internet and trouble
shoot after their computers "crash." Students with 90% attendance earn
the chance to take home a computer, and 100% attendance adds a printer to the
package!
